Closet survivalist from the 70s/80s
Howdy folks, I busted ass today with more firewood but still have insomnia.
So I thought I'd share a little story about my Stepfather. A great guy..straight up Rockwell International management for 25 years, plenty of $$ for his hobbies, antique guns and remodeling the lake home. Get the picture? He died in '99 Here's what tipped me off about him being a closet survivalist Before he died he gave me 2 Norinco SKSs and 1K of ammo he bought back in the late 80s He also had a stash of Peace dollars, Cash and old C-rations! When I had to help clean up and prep his town home for auction there was a 55 gal barrel of gas from the 70s gas crunch. Mom never mentioned any of these things thru the years. I suspect my stepfather wanted to stay gray. Good luck folks |

Re: Closet survivalist from the 70s/80s
Mom now lives in the lake home and several of the antique flintlocks he restored are over the fireplace mantle.
Andy, I estimated the gas to be over 30 years old...I opened the bung hole to have a look, no oder or fumes...the new Home owner "inherited" it as it would have cost mom $300+ to have Safety Clean Co. haul it away. Another thing, he always kept a 45 auto in the nightstand and one in the car... |
Re: Closet survivalist from the 70s/80s
A couple of years ago one of my elderly neighbors had a bunch of really old #10 cans of FD and dehydrated food for sale at his yard sale (he said it dated to the 70s). It was mostly meats and peanut butter and such, and the guy said, "This stuff will be good for 50 years!" Lol! I passed on it. I opened up some of my own that was canned in the early 80s (being a closet survivalist from the 70s myself!) and had gotten lost in my basement for 20 years. Even the dog wouldn't touch it...

I feel good for him that he never really needed it. Such good fortune.
